Copying programs to memory sticks (or CDs or whatever else), usually will not enable them to be installed or run on another machine.

First, it’s very hard to find all the visible pieces of complex software applications. They’re sometimes in directories other than the application’s main one (the C:Windows directory, for instance). Sometimes they’re even needy on other things already on the machine (the assess version of DirectX, for instance).

Second, application installs often store critical bits of information in a huge system file called the Registry. It’s usually not possible to pull out all the pieces you need, and it is impossible to copy the Registry from one machine to another without wrecking the second machine.

If you still have the installation disks for software, you can generally bed in it on the new machine and uninstall it from the ancient. Failing that, here are some of your options for paying less than full price for Microsoft Office:

First, if you’re a student, you may qualify for the Office Professional Academic edition of Office at a pretty excellent price ($79.95):

    http://www.microsoft.com/student/

Second, if you’re interested in buying just Word, check out this URL, especially the second group of listings.

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/FX101754511033.aspx

Note that the privileged of the two prices quoted is for a full version of that program and the lower, for upgrades from void software. Read the list of upgrade-qualifying software carefully: MS Works is often one, and may have come on your machine.

Finally, if you’re willing to spend a small to save a small, Microsoft Works is available in stores for about $40.00. You could buy a copy, bed in it, then buy Office at the upgrade level. I reckon you’d come out ahead. Note that the upgrade copy probably checks your machine for Works’ presence, so don’t get rid of it with you’ve installed Office. You never know when you’re going to have to reinstall Office.

    Hope that helps.

The answer is generally No. You would have no thought where all the program system files have been installed. You could try putting this hard drive in an external hard drive case, jumpered as slave, join it to the USB port. Remove the boot files from it. Then find the directory where the program loads from, click on the file name and send it to your desktop. Click on the destop icon and see if it will work. This may or may not work.
