Jr High School kids should be able to notice that. I know some elementery children that can tell the difference. I can tell by the filename extension what program will try to open it. There must be something more to your issue that would make more sense out of your question.
Are you going to school/college and were told that you need to have Microsoft Office/Excel to work on homework assignments? And that you do not have it and wondering if there is a way to trick someone?
You might get by using OpenOffice and doing a “Save As” and picking an Excel plot.

from Numbers to Excel? it works without an error 95% of the time. the Windows Excel user should not be able to see a difference. but if you do something complex in numbers, then the Excel user will email you back saying theres a problem…at that top you can tell them you are using Numbers, and you have to manually troubleshoot from there (usually the problem is “Merged Cells”) Openoffice is better with a 99.9% thriving conversion to Excel rate.

to get your file from numbers to Excel, you have to “Export”
    - click File
    - click Export
    - click Excel tab
    - click Next

and your file should be saved with a .xls extension (thats vital for Windows users)
if its a simple file, you should be able to email it, and the Excel user will never know the difference.

i reckon Word and Pages will have a similar “export” process. Windows users will look for a .doc extension.
