I am told it is straightforward, best go into the Help on Powerpoint where it is clarified in detail
* Open a PowerPoint file
* On the Insert menu, top to Movies and Sounds, and then click Sound from File.
* Click the music or sound file you want to insert and then click OK.
·Tips: Permanently place the music/audio file in the same folder as your PowerPoint presentation. If you later go the PowerPoint presentation to another computer, copy the music/audio file too. Maintenance your music/sound file in the same folder as your presentation ensures the link will still work. But, you should permanently test the music/audio file on a new machine just to be certain. Re-insert the music/audio file, if necessary.
* With you click OK, you’ are promoted with a message asking how you want the music/audio file to start in the slide show. Choose Automatically.
Make sure the soundtrack is a WAV file. It is the only format that can be embedded into powerpoint.

Now you can play the soundtrack from the very beginning to the end of your slideshow.
* In PowerPoint 2007, do as follows:
1. On the slide, click Insert to pick the Sound drop-down list on the very right below the tab. Select Sound from File in the list and choose the specified sound track from your hard drive.
2. Click OK and a message prompts, saying “How do you want the sound to start in the slide show?”. Click Automatically.
