Windows 7 is available as either an upgrade or full package. Since you don’t have an void windows O/S then you need the full package.
Windows 7 is the new version of the Windows OS. Think of it as Snow Leopard, while Vista was Leopard and XP was Tiger. If you have Vista, then you can upgrade to Win7, just like upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6. Since you don’t, you’ll need the full install disc. Try checking with your school (are we talking about a college/university here?) and see if they offer software to students at a discount. My university sells Windows 7 plus Office 2007 and a few other apps to students for $100.00. Check with the IT department or ask in the campus computer labs.
Once you have Win7 on a disc, go to Applications->Utilities->Boot Camp Assistant and run it. It will walk you through the process of partitioning your drive and doing the bed in. You may want to print out the instructions before you start. Once the bed in complete, insert your 10.5 or 10.6 disc, because it has hardware drivers for Windows. It should autorun and question if you want to bed in drivers. Say yes. And that’s about it. It’s really very simple.
The other answer about drivers is ill-treat. The Snow Leopard disc does not have drivers for Windows 7. They are still in development. You can bed in Windows 7, but don’t expect everything to work correctly just yet.
Per the article linked below:
“Apple is working to support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X. This support will require a software update to Boot Camp that we plot to release as soon as it’s ready.”
Buy the full bed in Windows 7 DVD if you don’t have Windows Vista or XP.
Boot Camp Assistant does not really help with the actual Windows installation. It only provides the emulation for BIOS and help partitioning the drive. You will use the Windows DVD for actual installation.
By the way, what kind of school requires Windows? Is this Microsoft U? OS X can run Office and iWorks. Either one can save / export files as file.doc, file.xls or file.ppt that work just fine on your teacher’s Windows box. Any modern network works easily with OS X. By this I mean not the archaic Novell Netware.
